SIL vs SDA: Which Do You Need in Adelaide?
When it comes to NDIS housing and support, you will often hear two terms: Supported Independent Living (SIL) and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA). They are related, but they’re not the same thing. You may need one or the other, and sometimes you may actually need both.
What is SIL?
Supported Independent Living (SIL) means you have paid support staff to help you live as independently as possible. SIL does not provide the house itself — it provides the people and systems that help with everyday life.
- Personalised Support: Daily tasks like cooking, cleaning, personal care, or getting to appointments.
- Flexible Living Options: Live alone or share with others, depending on your plan and preferences.
- Community Engagement: SIL providers often help build skills and keep you connected with the community.
- 24/7 Availability: For people with high support needs, SIL can cover round-the-clock assistance.
Think SIL when: You want or need staff support to live in your own home.
What is SDA?
Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is about the bricks and mortar — homes designed or modified for people with very high support needs or extreme functional impairment.
- Specialised Design: Features like wider doorways, accessible bathrooms, reinforced ceilings, or assistive technology.
- Safety and Comfort: Built to reduce risks and make daily living easier.
- High Care Compatibility: Designed to suit people who need more than basic daily support.
- Varied Staffing Models: Some SDA homes have 24/7 onsite staff, others operate differently.
Think SDA when: You need a home that’s physically designed around your disability, not just regular housing with supports.
What to Think About
Support vs Housing: Remember — SIL is staffing, SDA is housing. You might need one, the other, or both. And this might change over time.
Funding vs Preference: Sometimes your plan funds 2:1 support but you dream of living solo. Or you want the “perfect” house that’s 40km from family, but a good-enough one is just around the corner. Be clear on the non-negotiables but keep some flexibility.
Local Reality: In Adelaide, SDA supply is limited and patchy. You could have 100 people looking and 100 houses available, and still not have a perfect match — because the mix of features and locations doesn’t line up neatly.
